Victims

We had a strong windstorm last night and as we lay in bed we heard a tree falling very close by. When I went out this morning I found this 90 foot fir tree bisecting our orchard. Fortunately the gate survived.

At the root end you can see the story. The tree had grown on top of a slab of old growth tree. With our dry weather the ground is very soft and the wind proved too much. The roots hadn’t grown through the slab so there was very little holding the fir up. There was also a small cedar and a medium alder in the same root mass.

Survivalists

Two trees that got their start on top of an old growth stump. Eventually the stump will disappear leaving two unusual trees. There is also evidence of a fire many years ago but probably before these trees took root.
