Barred Owl

Well, the Barred Owls are out in abundance right now, unfortunately due to lots of baby Robins now on the ground. This one was being attacked by Robins, Hummingbirds, Towhees and Swainson’s Thrushes though you wouldn’t know it as it sat calmly and and scoped out the territory.

  1. I’ve read that these guys are pushing the Spotted Owl out of their territory. Still, it’s nice to see some owls in the woods. Fun to see nature in action right in your yard!

    • For some reason we have never had Spotted Owls in our woods (maybe because of the Barred Owls 😦 ) We have had one pair of Barred Owls live here year round for a number of years now and they are always a pleasure to see. My goal is to get one mid-flight but pretty hard in the woods.

    • The hummingbirds are quite amazing. They will dive bomb the owl and actually make contact. Pretty brave for such a small bird. I’m not sure how much of a nuisance an owl is to a hummingbird. Pretty slim pickings.

      • Good point about slim pickings, and I think there’s a certain amount of attack-by-contagion that goes on, like when one crow gets started, they all join in. Maybe it’s something the hummingbird does just because it’s the right thing to do. 😉
