• Thanks Mark. Yes, it would have been quite the tree in it’s day. This is one of probably 30 old growth stumps that we have on the property. The area was logged in the late 1890’s and these are the remains. Over our 40 years here we have seen them slowly returning to the forest floor.

    • Yes, all sorts of critters in, on and around the stumps. I’ve noticed lately that either bears or raccoons are spending more time excavating the decaying trunks. Looking for bugs and salamander I guess.

    • Yes, lots of creepy, crawly life in the old stumps. I also leave quite a few smaller standing dead trees in our woods to provide a habitat and restaurant for some of our birds and squirrels.
