• Thank you. Don’t know if you can grow gunnera in Alberta but you may have seen them in your travels through BC. They look sort of like a giant prickly rhubarb plant and can get very large. Our is about 7 feet tall now and the leaves are 2.5 to 3 feet across. Quite an impressive sight. They are native to Brazil. They have wonderful texture and colour for photographing.

      • The deer eat it when the first shoots come up in the Spring. It gets kind of tough and leathery as it matures so it isn’t quite as appealing though the fawns like to experiment. I would say it is drought tolerant as we never water ours though it’s in a damper part of the garden. You need a big space for it though as the plant can be 7 feet high and maybe 10 feet across.
